An outstanding safety record has earned York Electric Cooperative the 2005 ECSC President's Safety Award from the statewide association of electric co-ops.
Terry Williams, vice president of Loss Control and Training with ECSC (The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc.), announced the award in January. ECSC is the trade association for 20 independent, consumer-owned electric cooperatives around the state, providing safety, training, communications and other assistance to member co-ops.
York Electric Cooperative topped Category II, for co-ops with 50-99 employees.
York Electric and two other winning cooperatives maintained the lowest accident rates among co-ops of their size for 2005. Laurens Electric Cooperative topped Category I, which is for co-ops with 100 or more employees. New Horizon Electric Cooperative, a generation and transmission cooperative also headquartered in Laurens, won the award in Category III, which is for co-ops with 49 or fewer employees.
"This is a significant accomplishment of which all employees of the winning cooperatives should be very proud," Williams said. "It could not have occurred without the full support of each and every employee at each cooperative."
Williams noted that York Electric had previously received the award, which was established in 1999, in 2002. The co-op's focus on safety not only protects employees but also co-op member consumers and the general public, he said, while helping to hold down the cost of service. "Electricity is a friend when used safely and wisely," Williams said.
