Firefighters use donation to save life
Letter from Domenic Manera
Fire Chief, City of York
July 31, 2006
Mr. Paul Basha
President and CEO of York Electric Cooperative
Dear Paul,
I wanted to take a moment and thank you for the AED's that you presented to all of the fire departments in October 2004.
Just this past Friday, July 28th 2006, I received a radio call from another city employee reporting a female having a heart attack near the Duke Power office on Liberty Street. During this time, all the EMS units were busy on other calls so Firefighter/EMT Jordan Austin and I immediately responded to the call with the Zoll AED. Upon our arrival, we found an elderly lady in the driver's seat of her car. We immediately applied the Zoll AED pads to her and administered one shock treatment. After the initial treatment, we removed her from the car to the shoulder of the road where we continued CPR in conjunction with the AED for over 10 minutes, until an ambulance from Piedmont Medical Center arrived on scene. During these 10 minutes of CPR, the AED administered 8 shock treatments in an attempt to stabilize her heart. After receiving additional Paramedic treatment on scene, she was transported to the hospital in Rock Hill. I am happy to say as of today around noon Jordan and I visited her and her family and she is doing well with no signs of permanent damage.
It is very clear that this outcome would have been very different had we not been equipped with an AED to use. Again thank you for your commitment to the local fire departments and community by providing such a very vital piece of equipment.
Respectfully,
Domenic Manera
Fire Chief, City of York
