Trade up, mow down pollution

Electric mowers are most environmentally friendly

Electric mowers are most environmentally friendlyOperating an old gasoline-powered lawnmower for one hour can produce as much air pollution as driving a car almost 200 miles. Emissions vary depending on the make and model of both car and mower, of course. But while newer gas mowers don't pollute as much, even mowing one hour with a newer model still produces pollution equivalent to driving a car 50 miles.

Mowers and other gas-powered lawn and garden equipment are the leading source of off-road air pollution, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Using an electric mower also helps eliminate accidental fuel spillage, which can contaminate underground water tables. Electric mowers are better for air quality as well as:

• easy to start
• quiet
• less polluting
• lightweight
• easy to maintain, and
• inexpensive to operate.
