Conserving energy with new energy
Message from the President and CEO
February, 2008
Want to save money on your electric bill? As a member of one of the 20 electric cooperatives that provide power to 1.4 million South Carolinians, you have plenty of options.
Helping members use energy wisely has always been our goal. This year, however, we're bringing new energy to the effort.
Co-ops listen to their members and respond to their needs. We've responded to a call back in 2004 to harness more renewable energy resources by offering the Green Power program in conjunction with our power supplier, the state-owned utility Santee Cooper. On our own, the state's co-ops are investing heavily in research into renewable resources and continuing to offer and develop energy-efficiency programs to benefit our members.
For instance, we're championing the use of compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, which use only a quarter of the electricity of a standard incandescent bulb. The state's co-ops are now embarking on an ambitious plan to put more than seven million CFL bulbs in members' homes over the next 10 years.
Energy conservation has consequences that reach beyond lowering your utility bill. Conservation can help delay, at least for a while, the need to build new power plants. In turn, that can help slow the pace of increases in energy costs and promote a cleaner environment. That's why various programs offered by York Electric and other South Carolina electric co-ops focus on the key areas of residential energy consumption: heating and cooling, water heating, lighting and refrigeration. Cooperatives offer special programs for business and industrial members, too.
We're expanding our efforts to help members use energy wisely. Our Web site, yorkelectric. net, as well as the statewide co-op site, ecsc.org, offer a wealth of
information. And, as always, Living in South Carolina Magazine brings you valuable advice, tips and guidance to help you make smart energy choices.
This year, in York Electric Cooperative's pages of this magazine, we'll be highlighting more ways to help you save energy and money. Look for the accompanying logo with these stories. Check out the "Energy efficiency tip of the month," too.
Helping you use energy wisely today while conserving precious resources for tomorrow is another way your electric co-op is looking out for you. Remember: Together, we have the power to make a difference.
