The cooperative registered 4,311 members in attendance at the meeting, held at the co-op's York office. The members elected three of their peers to York Electric Cooperative's Board of Trustees. Tom Settlemyre was elected to fill the District 1 seat vacated by the death of long-time trustee Woodrow W. Culp. Incumbent Jack Cornwell was elected to fill District 2 seat. Carolyn Hicks Boyd was elected to fill the District 5 seat. These board members will serve three-year terms, which began in May.
During the business meeting, board Vice Chairman Paul D. Poston presented Culp's son, Woodie, an honorarium board resolution in appreciation of Culp's substantial contributions to the growth, progress and success of York Electric Cooperative. "He was faithful to his family, his church and his co-op," Poston noted. Later, President and CEO Paul Basha called Culp "a great man," adding, "We really miss him."
In his CEO report, Basha addressed power costs and the upcoming challenges facing the electric utility industry. Basha said rising costs require the cooperative to adjust its rates but noted that most members would not see an increase in their power bills. Basha also pointed out that a recent survey shows that York Electric Cooperative's members enjoy the lowest rates of any co-op in the state.
He asked members to get in touch with elected officials about any proposals to deal with climate change and global warming, noting that many current proposals could affect members' power bills. Basha pointed out a mail-in card in the May issue of South Carolina Living Magazine that gave members an easy way to contact their leaders. "We're going to do our best to keep you informed so that you can be a member who will speak out about those issues," he said.
Basha praised the cooperative's employees for their hard work, noting that they consistently exhibit the Touchstone Energy values of accountability, integrity, commitment to community and innovation. He also thanked members for participating in the meeting.
