By Cameron Moore
June, 2008

Washington Youth TourYork Electric Cooperative congratulates Holly Canipe of York Comprehensive High School and Donteau Smith of Northwestern High School for being selected to attend the 2008 Washington Youth Tour. Each year, The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association sponsors high school juniors to attend the all-expense-paid trip to visit Washington, D.C. The tour is June 14–19.

(L) Donteau Smith, (R) Holly CanipeYork Electric's continued participation in the tour reflects their ongoing commitment to shape the lives of young people in our community. Each year, this opportunity exposes young people to a week of cultural, political, and social experiences. More than 1,500 students are flown to Washington, D.C., from all across the country. During their stay, they visit many historical sites such as the Kennedy Center, Arlington Cemetery, the many Smithsonian museums, and have photo-opportunities at the White House, just to name a few!

South Carolina delegates gather on the steps of the Capitol building during the Washington Youth Tour. The trip is going to be an amazing experience for Holly, who says she dreamed of going to the nation's capital to "actually experience the things that she learned in school." Donteau is pleased to have the chance to visit a place full of so much culture, saying that "a picture tells a thousand words ... going tells a million."

Holly and Donteau were selected among a group of high school juniors who submitted applications and competed through an interview process. South Carolina tour participants were also eligible to compete for a college scholarship awarded by the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina.
