Our Energy, Our Future
In 2008, York Electric Cooperative renewed its focus on energy efficiency and conservation. We joined a nationwide effort called "Our Energy, Our Future," aimed at encouraging members to contact Congress at ourenergy.coop with concerns about the future of our energy supply. YEC established or continued numerous energy efficiency and conservation programs:
- Each residential York Electric Cooperative member received two compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs through our "Do the Light Switch" program. York will send each of its residential households another CFL bulb in 2009. CFLs last six to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use about 75 percent less energy. CFLs also reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. By using just one CFL, a home can save $30 or more in energy costs over the bulb's lifetime. More »

- We implemented a "Trade A Tree" program. Members who must have a tree removed by YEC for right-of-way purposes receive a coupon toward a new tree from a local nursery. More »

- Springfield Middle School in Fort Mill became a GreenPower Solar School. Solar Schools encourage interest in the environment and demonstrate the feasibility and limitations of solar power. More »

- YEC offers its members GreenPower, electricity generated from renewable resources such as methane gas from landfills and solar energy. YEC purchases 100% GreenPower for its Rock Hill branch office. More »

- York Electric implemented an internal recycling initiative and installed a cardboard compactor. YEC continues to use energy-efficient transformers and equipment. We recycle used motor oil for use as fuel for a clean-burning furnace that heats the co-op's fleet maintenance shop. We also recycle, re-use or sell leftover wire and wooden spools.

- YEC offers home energy audits for members. Our specially trained personnel visit members' homes and advise them on improvements that can result in energy and money savings. More »
