Donations help 24 families in crisis
July, 2009
With the downturn in the economy and soaring health-care costs, more and more people need a hand up. Fortunately, York Electric Cooperative members can help their neighbors by participating in Operation Round Up.
During May, the independent trust board that administers contributions to the Operation Round Up program distributed more than $21,000 in grants to 24 families with emergency needs. Since the program's inception, more than $1.2 million has been given.
For just $6 a year, members who choose to round up their electric bill help neighbors here in the co-op's service area as well as worthwhile community agencies that assist people all around York Electric Cooperative's service area. "Some are people who have lost jobs, face catastrophic or chronic health problems, lose their homes and belongings in fires or are already receiving disability income, but have to choose between buying medicine or food," notes Tammie Anderson, who chairs the trust board. "There are thousands of situations that put good people in a bind, and without help, they could never recover."
