Their day in the sun Lineworkers honored at Statehouse
September, 2009
ELECTRIC LINEWORKERS have their day in the sun almost every day, and during the summer months, the days are often brutally hot. Rarely, however, will you hear a lineman complain.
They had a much more pleasant "day in the sun" June 16, when South Carolina lawmakers honored lineworkers for York Electric Cooperative and all of the state's electric utilities. Resolutions were introduced in both the S.C. House and Senate chambers.
Approximately 50 lineworkers were on hand, representing the state's electric co-ops, the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper) as well as municipal power systems and investor-owned utilities. Our own Nick Adams, a first year lineworker, went to Columbia to represent York Electric Cooperative.

The resolutions recognized the contributions of the lineworkers for maintaining and restoring electric service, often during inclement weather and times of emergency. Lineworkers, it was noted, man the front lines to restore power when it's lost during a storm.
Over the last five years, the state's lineworkers have rendered aid more than 50 times, traveling as far as Louisiana and Ohio, the resolutions pointed out. Some have even helped in other nations. About 750 lineworkers have logged more than 26 months of service for electricity providers other than their own. They selflessly volunteer to leave their families to help those in need.
For lineworkers, the display of unity at the Statehouse June 16 wasn't just a one-time occurrence. Their dangerous and demanding work requires teamwork and cohesion, day in and day out, in biting cold or blazing heat.
Today, as we go about our business in air-conditioned comfort, let's all take a moment to remember their dedication, courage and sacrifices. Thank you, lineworkers!
