A true gentleman
We'll miss 'Mr. Roy,' long-time trustee and loyal YEC member
ROY E. WILKERSON, a long-time member of York Electric Cooperative's Board of Trustees, passed away August 30 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Mr. Roy, as he was affectionately known here at YEC, served on the Board of Trustees since November 1969. He served as chairman for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Geraldine, daughter and son-in-law Denise and William Mitchell, two grandchildren, William Roy and Allison Mitchell, a great-grandson, Driggs Mitchell, and sister, Virginia Allen. He was the son of W.B. and Ora Inman Wilkerson. His father previously served on YEC's Board of Trustees. A lifelong resident of York County, he served in the Army during the Korean War. He graduated in 1951 from Clemson College with a degree in animal husbandry.
A retired insurance business owner, he was an active member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Hickory Grove. Mr. Roy served as York Chamber of Commerce president, chairman of Divine Savior Hospital's board of directors, president of York Rotary Club, and was a member of the Bank of York's board. He was a member of the Palmetto Masonic Lodge, Hejaz Shrine Temple, and Watt Blackmon VFW Post.
Widely known and admired throughout the state's electric cooperative community, he served on the board of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc., the state association for co-ops, including its executive committee. He also represented York Electric on the boards of CEE-US, a statewide utility supply cooperative, and New Horizon Electric Cooperative, a wholesale power transmission cooperative.
Mr. Roy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a true gentleman. He always had a joke or story to tell and no doubt many will be retold as he is remembered fondly by friends and family. We at York Electric Cooperative will miss his insight, guidance and warmth.
Mr. Roy always had his fellow co-op members' best interests at heart. We hope that all YEC members will remember him, too, and keep the Wilkerson family in their thoughts and prayers.
