Saving through efficiency
What works at YEC can work in your home
IT'S ALL ABOUT EFFICIENCY at York Electric Cooperative.
A dedicated workforce using proven technology helps us hold down costs and continually improve your service. One happy result: We do not anticipate rate increases in 2010.
We want our members to embrace efficiency. That's the theme of a new co-op campaign, Together We Save.
YEC members are already tech-savvy. Through our Web site and our electronic newsletter, we get comments about ideas like smart grid technology, time-of- use rates and solar power. A team of employees is investigating each. We plan a pilot solar project this year. We'll pursue technologies proven to save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability
We're managing other costs. For instance, you'll receive nine issues of South Carolina Living in 2010. We'll skip February and August but keep you posted via our Web site and e-newsletter.
Power for the future
Last year, we took several forward-thinking actions to promote efficient operations.
York Electric and other South Carolina co-ops locked down a power supply to meet members' needs for decades. Contracting with Duke Energy gives us a dependable, reasonably priced, environmentally responsible power source in addition to Santee Cooper.
We continue to upgrade our distribution system. A new power transformer in our Gold Hill substation serves a growing area. Elsewhere, we added feeder lines, replaced poles and hardened the system to reduce storm-caused outages.
We aim for exceptional outage response, with a YEC truck on the scene in an hour or less. We're at 97 percent, pushing for 100.
We found other efficiencies in 2009. We chose not to fill five retirees' positions. We do more with less but still work safely. This saves lives and money. YEC recently surpassed a million hours worked without a lost-time accident.
Our own 'stimulus'
We strive to continually add value to your membership. Our discount card program, Co-op Connections, introduced in May, has saved YEC members $60,000 on prescriptions alone.
Over five years, we've returned almost $5 million to members through capital credits. Call it our own stimulus package.
Promoting wise energy use helps you save. That's why we offer programs like Help My House and Do the Light Switch, which provided 103,905 efficient CFL bulbs to YEC members.
