Co-ops once again distribute CFLs

CFLWe're joining with the state's other electric co-ops in another push to encourage members to "Do the Light Switch."

Since 2008, YEC has offered complimentary energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to members as part of the multi-year campaign. This year, we aren't mailing them, however. Each member who attended the co-op's annual meeting May 8 was offered one free 75-watt equivalent indoor/outdoor CFL floodlight.

By year's end, South Carolina's electric co-ops will have distributed more than 2 million CFLs to co-op members since "Do the Light Switch" kicked off.

"YEC is putting real energy efficiency into our members' hands by giving away these bulbs. Making the switch to CFLs is one of the easiest things members can do in their homes to save energy and money," President and CEO Paul Basha says. "One 75- watt-equivalent CFL will save an average of $44 over its lifetime. And that bulb will last 6–10 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb," Basha says.
