Touchstone Energy Senior $1,000 Scholarship

York Electric Cooperative awards a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior each May. You do not have to be a member of York Electric Cooperative to compete for this scholarship. The student must have average or above average grades and submit an essay.Courtney Slocum

The 2009 recipient is Courtney Slocum, the daughter of Debbie and Garland Slocum. Courtney graduated from Clover High School and plans to attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia where she will pursue a major in English and minor in French, Economics or Science. She has aspirations to teach secondary education.

York Electric Cooperative's School-to-Work Scholarship

York Electric awards an outstanding senior, who has participated in the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center's School-to-Work program, a $500 scholarship. The student must meet the following criteria in order to qualify:

  • Attending a two or four year college
  • 3.0 minimum overall GPA
  • 100 average in school-to-work program
  • No discipline record (including tardiness)
  • Meet district attendance policy
  • Submit a one-page, typed essay on why you should be considered.

Shaniqua JamisonPotential candidates can apply and submit their essays to the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center office. For more information on this scholarship, please contact Mr. Thomas Ray at the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center. The office number is 803-684-1910.

The 2009 recipient is Shaniqua Jamison, the daughter of Belinda Mitchell. Shaniqua graduated from York Comprehensive High School and will attend South Carolina State College this fall where she will study business, economics and accounting.

Jenny Ballard Opportunity Scholarship for Women Returning to College

The Jenny Ballard Opportunity Scholarship for Women Returning to College is awarded by South Carolina WIRE to two female electric cooperative members. Applicants for the $2,500 scholarships must have graduated from high school or earned GEDs, at least ten years ago, be accepted by an accredited South Carolina college or university and demonstrate financial need.

R. D. Bennett Scholarship

Each year, winners of the Washington Youth Tour contest are qualified to compete for the Robert D. Bennett Scholarship through The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina (ECSC). A one-time check in the amount of $2,500 will be issued to the student and the college, university, trade or tech school of the winning student's choice, after the registrar's office completes the proper paperwork. The scholarship money may be requested up to three years after the winner is named.

To compete for the scholarship, each Washington Youth Tour winner must submit an essay. Competition is based on the essays and participation during the trip. Trip chaperones will judge the essays. S.A.T scores, grade point average, class standing, and other honors will not be considered.

The Washington Youth Tour booklets produced by the ECSC include a page on the essays with suggested topics (page 6). These booklets are distributed to Youth Tour winners by York Electric Cooperative to assist the students in preparing for the essay. The essays may not exceed 1,000 words and must be typewritten and double-spaced. Students may use the ECSC booklets, publications from your Cooperative, sites on the web, and personal interviews as sources.

The winner will be announced following the Tour and will be recognized at one of ECSC's conferences.
