South Carolina's first renewable power generation program - The Green Power Program - has arrived.
Generated by Santee Cooper and distributed by York Electric Cooperative, South Carolina's Green Power plant collects methane gas from the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Landfill and the Lee County Landfill SC, LLC and the Richland County Landfill. There, the methane gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere-gases that possibly contribute to global warming-will be used as "green power" fuel.
The green power plant generates 14.2 megawatts of electricity which reduces enough methane emissions to be the environmental equivalent of planting more than 17,800 acres of trees.
Green Power is something we can all live with.
How will participating in Green Power affect my electric bill?
Green Power facilities are, in general, more expensive to install. Each block will add an extra $3 to your monthly electric bill. You can sign up for as many blocks as you like. All revenues from every block of Green Power you buy will be reinvested in future development of additional renewable resources or facilities.
