Most people know to unplug their computers when there is the possibility of an electrical storm, so that their equipment is not damaged by lightning. What most people don’t know is, the same lightning can travel through the phone line and damage the modem. In most cases, after a lightning surge, the modem is useless and must be replaced. Satellite TV connections, answering machines, and anything else tied to your phone lines are equally susceptible. It is a good idea to unplug any equipment before an electrical storm hits, and when leaving overnight or for a weekend. Just unplug the phone line to your modem and computer, and any other predisposed equipment.
Any expensive equipment should be plugged into a good surge protector at all times.
