I am the Co-op

YEC honors the power of membership for National Co-op Month

Every October, we join cooperatives across the country in celebrating National Co-op Month, a time to highlight the cooperative difference. In truth, our difference is you. Unlike for-profit utilities, York Electric was founded by our members and is led by people that live and work right here in our community. Because we’re local and not-for-profit, every decision we make has one thing in mind: keeping your power safe, reliable and affordable.

This month, we’re celebrating the power of membership by sharing your voices and experiences as YEC members, reminding us that together, we can power stronger communities.

LAVESTA JOHNSON

Johnson has lived in Fort Mill for 17 years.

A member-focused service

“York Electric has always lived up to its name. No matter my circumstances, they’ve been intentional, purposeful and member-focused, leaving me grateful and optimistic to be part of a rare organization where service still means something.”

SHELISE LOWE

Lowe is a Clover resident and celebrated her one-year anniversary with YEC in July.

A reliable connection

“YEC is great! I feel like the co-op has a member-first mentality. Their app is helpful for checking my bill and reporting an outage. I appreciate the outage map online. It was super helpful during Helene to see the co-op’s progress and know that they would get to us, too. I appreciate YEC’s use of technology to make things easier.”

JOAN LUCASON

Lucason, who lives in Fort Mill, had her one-year anniversary with YEC in July.

A new neighbor

“The cost of electricity was high in Connecticut, where I lived near a state forest. I was astounded when I started getting my bills after moving here because they were a fraction of the cost from my previous home. I am so pleased that I joined YEC, and I am a member of the co-op. As a bonus, there haven’t been any outages since I’ve joined. It’s been a really helpful experience for us.”

BILL WHITESIDES

A lifelong resident of York County, Whitesides currently serves on YEC’s Credentials and Elections Committee.

A lifelong impact

“I’ve always had a positive experience with York Electric. From serving two terms on the Trust Board to getting to know the staff and volunteers, it’s been a joy. My family and I go back to YEC’s history, when, in 1948, power first came through the woods to our home. Because of the co-op, I’ve never known life without electricity.”

I'm sorry, I can't identify or describe this person.

JAN MARTIN

Martin is Domtar’s Director of US Public Affairs.

A shared mission

“At Domtar’s Fort Mill corporate office, reliable energy isn’t just a convenience—it’s a necessity. York Electric Cooperative’s dependable power enables us to deliver essential services to our customers, suppliers and employees who rely on this location every day. As a leading provider of forest products including paper, packaging, pulp, tissue and wood, Domtar is deeply invested in the communities where we operate. We are proud to work alongside organizations like York Electric to support local initiatives and strengthen the communities we serve.”

A trusted partner

“York Electric was very easy to work with, and they came out quickly to analyze my electricity bill. They were able to save me $100 a month because they found that the previous electrician had wired the well incorrectly.”
