Empowering our members is important at YEC so that you can use electricity the way in which you choose. We proudly serve our members, the owners of our co-op, providing unmatched dedication and skill to get the job done. Beyond the service provided by our dedicated employees, we want to be your trusted source for information about electricity and give you the knowledge to use power safely and conservatively. It’s your power, it’s your Cooperative. So, where does your electricity come from, anyway? Where does your power come from?

A Heap of Heartfelt Gratitude
As a member of York Electric Cooperative, you are a part of a community service program that helps raise thousands of dollars each year for worthy community projects right here at home.
That’s right. By rounding up electric bills to the next highest dollar, York Electric contributes money to local charities, and the charities, in turn, provide assistance to individuals who are in need. The average member participating in Operation Round Up® contributes about 50 cents a month. Since the program began in 2000, more than $2.5 million has been donated.
Who distributes the funds?
The program is administered by the Operation Round Up Trust Board, an independent board of community leaders that assesses the needs for granting Operation Round Up funds. Local non-profit organizations are assisted so they are able to provide food, shelter, clothing, health care, etc. to individuals who are in need.
Contributions to Operation Round Up are tax deductible. In January and February, your utility bill will have a summary of the contributions you made to Operation Round Up during the previous year. York Electric will also use every available means, including South Carolina Living magazine, to keep you informed about how and when funds are distributed. Learn more about Operation Round Up

Shining New Year: Solar through the power of community
As we ring in the New Year, YEC’s community solar program is shining brighter. It has become more compelling since our Lesslie Community Solar Farm began energy production in September of 2016. The model has rapidly captured members’ interest to the level that we now have a waiting list which continues to increase monthly.
We have worked diligently to find a viable site to build a second farm to meet your needs. I’m excited to announce our efforts will come to fruition this spring. The 180 kilowatt (kW) East York community solar farm will be constructed in the East York Industrial Park located off Park Place Road in York just south of American Eagle Wheel. We project the farm will be built by April depending upon the permitting process and weather conditions.
Investing in clean, renewable energy is important as we grow into the future, and community solar farms offer members an opportunity to invest in solar energy without the cost, hassle, and installation of solar equipment on their home. We see this not only as an investment in the future of energy, but as a way to accommodate the needs and expectations of our membership.
Members can participate for as low as $130 to start the program. Monthly billing will follow the initial fees at the rate of $12 per KW subscription. Subsequently, participating members will receive a solar credit on their bill at the rate of 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), which will be based upon the amount of energy the farm produces proportional to their kW subscription.
Our number one goal at YEC is to look out for you and to continue to serve you well. Our industry is changing and so are your needs. We’re not content to only deliver power. We also want to be a reliable resource in other ways, helping you make informed decisions regarding energy-related decisions. In order to do so, we listen to your needs; which improves our understanding, builds trust, strengthens our relationship and fosters cooperation.
Learn more about community solar or other programs we offer, or call (803) 684-4248. Also, if you are considering installing solar panels, please contact us so we can give you the facts about solar and recommend a reputable dealer.
We are here for you!

Staying Trim
YEC’s right-of-way (ROW) maintenance program helps to reduce outages that can occur in rain, snow or any other weather. Tree trimming helps us clear space around power lines, protecting them from tree limbs and underbrush that can lead to downed lines. Keeping the wilderness back takes constant attention, but it helps keep the power on for you and our linemen safe. See a detailed map of the ROW schedule planned for the first quarter in the Biggers Branch substation area. Questions? Call (803) 684-4248.

Co-op warns members about scams
York Electric Cooperative is alerting members to be aware of scams during the holiday season. Credit card numbers and personal information should never be given to suspicious callers. If you receive a suspicious call, mailing, email or other type of unusual contact, you should contact local law enforcement. Members should call YEC at (803) 684-4248 if they have questions about their accounts. Member services representatives can help confirm payment and balance due on a member’s account.

Advance Pay: A new flexible payment plan is now available for YEC members
All members are not alike, and some members want or need the flexibility when purchasing their power. That’s why your co-op is now offering Advance Pay–an innovative bill payment program designed to meet your needs–and your individual lifestyle.
For members looking to pay for power as they use it, Advance Pay puts you in charge of your electric bill. Advance Pay gives you the power to purchase electricity when you want, weekly or biweekly, in the amounts you choose rather than one monthly payment, allowing you to monitor and control your electric usage daily, weekly, monthly with a select payment plan that works for you and your budget.
How does Advance Pay work?
When you sign up for Advance Pay, you deposit money into your account, similar to a prepaid cellular phone, and as you use electricity, the cost is deducted on a daily basis. You will have a number of ways to access and monitor your account at any time. This enables you to chart your own usage so you can better understand how you are using electricity. This is a helpful way to make your money go further. In fact, monitoring power usage typically reduces consumption on an average of 10 percent. And, there is no security deposit, late charge, disconnect or reconnect fee with Advance Pay.
When you set up your Advance Pay account, you will choose the balance at which you will begin to receive low-balance notifications via a method you choose:
- text message
- automated calling service
This will give you time to purchase more power before the meter stops.
Advance Pay also helps you help the environment by ending paper billings and costs associated with mailing.
If funds in your account run out, your meter will stop, the power will be automatically disconnected, and you will be notified. However, once your outstanding balance and minimum payment is made, even on weekends and holidays, your service will be reconnected in minutes.
If you are already a YEC member currently on a regular residential rate, you can switch to an Advance Pay account. Any existing security deposit will be credited to your account balance. If you decide that Advance Pay is not for you, we’ll switch you back to a traditional account with an applicable security deposit.
Advance Pay teaches the value of electricity and what uses energy in your home. It also provides absolute control over how much you pay and helps you reduce your energy use. However, participation in Advance Pay is limited to qualified accounts, and the rate is slightly higher than YEC’s traditional rate.
You may make payments, check your account balance, sign up for alerts and reminders, and monitor your energy use through the Member Services Portal.
