Board of Trustees

York Electric Cooperative is governed by a Board of Trustees, a group of local people with the same needs, concerns and perspective as their fellow cooperative members. There are no shares or stockholders or investments to be looked after, only the good of all the people who make up the York Electric Cooperative family. Best of all, these board members are only beholden to you and your interests because they are elected by you, the member. The minutes of YEC Board Meetings may be accessed in the Member Portal.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a part of a co-op means that you are part of a team. Teamwork means you are working together towards a common goal and for a co-op, that common goal is taking care of our members. As a board member, I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do and serving members if I am helping someone solve a problem. Helping others, looking out for my neighbors and supporting our local community are all things I believe in and the co-op business model represents those ideals every day.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I grew up in Bullock Creek and I still live there with my wife of over 40 years. I identify with York Electric members because I am one myself and have been my whole life. I also had the privilege of watching this co-op grow. Not only did I experience the positive impact of York Electric firsthand growing up here and serving on the board for over 16 years, but I also learned a lot from my parents who were life-long members, who often recalled stories of when York Electric brought power to their farm. Being able to share and rely on personal experiences and local history is an honor. Equally as important, I do my best to ask questions in the boardroom to support our area’s continued growth, while providing reliable power at an affordable rate. During my experience with co-op employees, I’ve found that few people have the same dedication and work-ethic than the local folks here at York Electric. I do my best to take care of them so that they, in turn, can help look out for our members.

About Rick Sadler

Rick and his wife, Sherry, have two children and one grandson. Rick worked in maintenance at New Indy Container Board for 40 years until he retired. In his spare time, he farms hay and cattle and enjoys spending time with his family. He is a member of Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church and lives every day to be a good husband, father, friend and someone who looks out for his neighbors.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a member of a cooperative means being a part owner of the organization. Having a voice in cooperative decisions through democratic voting helps keep the cooperative focused on its members. When decisions support the mission of providing affordable and reliable energy, every member benefits. York Electric has deep roots in York County, and it feels good knowing that we are all part of its history and community involvement.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

Having the opportunity to serve my cooperative and its members has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I bring experience from the small-business community, along with knowledge of finance, banking and insurance. Serving as a trustee gives me the opportunity to represent our members and employees while helping support the cooperative’s continued smooth operation.

About Will Mitchell

Will was born and raised in York and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Limestone College. After spending several years in Idaho pursuing his love of snow skiing, he returned to York in 2005 and joined his family’s insurance business. He now has more than 20 years of experience in the industry and operates Boney Insurance and Farmers Mutual Insurance Company as a fifth-generation principal agent.

Will and his wife, Rebekah, raised their two sons, Driggs and Bridger, on a small farm between York and Clover. The family attends First Presbyterian Church in York. Will is active in the community and has served on several boards and economic development organizations throughout York County, including the Bank of York Board of Directors. He still enjoys spending time with his family in the mountains out West whenever he has the opportunity.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a member of a cooperative means that you are a part owner of the utility. The cooperative is there to provide safe, affordable power to its members. It values its members and is always looking for ways to support and give back to the community.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I believe my biggest contribution as a trustee is always keeping the members in mind. I want to help make sure they receive quality service and that the decisions we make as a board are in their best interest. I grew up understanding the important role an electric cooperative plays in the community, and I bring that perspective with me as I serve.

About Carolyn Boyd

Carolyn earned a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and retired after teaching for 31 years. She grew up on a farm and has remained active in the agricultural community. She has served as York County Farm Bureau Women’s chair, on the York County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and on the South Carolina Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. Carolyn and her husband, Clint, have been married for 38 years and have one son, Bubba. She is involved with St. Paul Methodist Church and serves on the advisory board for Clover’s Future Farmers of America.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a member of the cooperative means that I am a part owner, along with more than 70,000 other members. Members, like me, have a voice in the cooperative when electing board members to represent us. As a board member, I know it is my responsibility to look out for my neighbors, local businesses and greater community by helping keep power costs affordable and service reliable.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

Growing up in rural western York County, we did not have access to internet service. I believe one of my biggest contributions, alongside the rest of the board, was helping bring fiber service to our members. Now, we have the same service opportunities and connectivity as others in more urban areas of our county.

About Tommie Bratton

Tommie has lived in Hickory Grove his entire life. He lives on a farm that has been in his family for 97 years, where he raises beef cattle. He and his wife, Rita, have been married for 47 years. They have one son, Thomas, and two granddaughters.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Serving as a director of York Electric has been a pleasure. I have been associated with the cooperative for more than 50 years, and my father served as a director before me. We both felt fortunate to serve our fellow members and believed it was important to be available whenever they needed us. To me, being part of a cooperative means members can depend on local people who are willing to listen and help.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I hope my biggest contribution has been being available to our members and listening when they have questions or concerns. I have always tried to be someone members can contact when they need help and to make sure their concerns are heard.

About Jack Cornwell

Jack has lived in the area his entire life and has longstanding ties to York Electric, following in the footsteps of his father, who also served as a director. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and a Master of Science in Genetics from Clemson University. Jack taught school for seven years and worked as a general contractor for 50 years. He has two daughters.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

I enjoy being part of the co-op because of its focus on family and community involvement. The cooperative puts the benefits of the organization into the hands of the members who use its services rather than large or distant shareholders. It is good to be part of an organization that is like family, that works together for the greater good and gives its members a voice through their vote.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I was raised by Christian parents in a close family and was taught at a young age about the importance of helping others, understanding the struggles families face and recognizing the value of a dollar. As a business owner, I understand what it takes to serve people while keeping a business operating successfully. That requires dedication, balance and careful oversight, and I bring the lessons and skills I have learned over the years to my service as a trustee.

About Scott Good

Scott is a local business owner with more than 30 years of experience. He and his wife, Carrie, have been married for 36 years. They have four children and three grandchildren, with another grandchild on the way. Scott enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and making cherished memories together. He serves in several roles at Tirzah ARP Church and enjoys being involved in his small-town community.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

I have been a co-op member for more than 40 years, and I appreciate the service York Electric provides. I also have three accounts served by Duke Energy, and the difference between the two is night and day. I grew up with Duke Energy and have seen firsthand that York Electric does a better job maintaining its equipment and clearing rights of way. York Electric employees are always willing to help and get the job done for members.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I do not work for the co-op or its employees. I work for the membership of York Electric Cooperative. Any member with a problem is welcome to call me, and I will try to help that member and will get them an answer.

About Richard Roach

Richard is a Vietnam veteran who served from 1967 to 1968 as a gun sergeant with a 155 mm howitzer unit. He has a high school education and grew up working on his father’s farm. He later formed a partnership that farmed as many as 1,200 acres of cropland, primarily growing cotton, wheat, soybeans and corn. Richard continues to farm today. He and his wife, Gloria, have been married for 59 years and have four children, 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a member of a cooperative means belonging to a power provider where you are not just a number, but an actual member and part owner. There is a sense of family and local connection, with the needs of members always coming first. That member-focused approach is what makes the cooperative model meaningful to me.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

Having worked in the electric industry for more than 40 years, I bring a great deal of practical experience and industry knowledge to my service on the board. My background gives me a strong understanding of electric distribution and the work required to provide safe, reliable service. I use that experience to ask informed questions and help the board make decisions that are in the best interest of our members.

About Tom Settlemyre

Tom is a four-year veteran of the United States Navy and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Appalachian State University. He worked in the electrical industry for 42 years, giving him extensive knowledge of electric utility operations and distribution. Tom and his wife, Gina, have three children and nine grandchildren.

What does being a member of a cooperative mean to you?

Being a member of a cooperative means having local control of an organization that is focused on service rather than profit. It means members have a voice and that their voices matter. Decisions are made in the best interest of the membership by people who live in and understand the communities being served. That local connection helps keep the organization accountable, responsive and focused on providing reliable service to the people it was created to serve.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution as a trustee?

I spent most of my career serving the public in management roles at all levels and have more than 30 years of involvement with nonprofit organizations. Those experiences gave me a practical understanding of leadership, customer service, accountability and effective organizational operations. As a trustee, I ask questions, examine the facts and work to make decisions that support reliable service, financial responsibility and the cooperative’s long-term success.

About Kevin Tolson

Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and has spent more than 30 years serving the public. His career has included roles with the York County Sheriff’s Office, the State Law Enforcement Division and the 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. He also formed and directed the York County Multi- Jurisdictional Forensic Services Unit.

Kevin has served with several local and statewide organizations, including United Way of York County, Leadership York County, Keystone Substance Abuse Services and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He was named the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association Sheriff of the Year in 2019 and has served as the association’s president. He also volunteers his time to help first responders cope with trauma.

Kevin and his wife, Beth, have two daughters and two grandchildren. They attend Impact Community Church.
