Every member, every time: YEC members share their experiences with their co-op

York Electric Cooperative is proud to serve a diverse membership across the communities in York, Chester, Cherokee and Lancaster counties. When we first were formed in 1941, YEC brought affordable power to farmers and members living in the rural parts of our local areas. Eighty-one years later, your co-op now serves a wide array of members with varying energy needs. From small families and young students to local businesses and large industries, York Electric continues to look out for all members big or small. Every member. Every time.

Your trusted energy advisor

YEC has served the Wright family in Fort Mill since 2008. During this time, they have grown to understand and appreciate the cooperative difference. Describing his family’s experience with the co-op, Todd Wright shares, “Since becoming a member of YEC, I cannot imagine going back to another way of doing business with a for-profit utility that raises rates all the time and has to pay dividends to shareholders.”

In addition to being grateful for receiving Capital Credits as a member, Wright explains he really values the concern we show for our members’ best interests. As an electric vehicle owner and participant in solar energy efforts, Wright says, “I’ve consulted YEC’s Energy Services Representative, Brent Clinton, for advice a lot over the years. It is so refreshing to have someone actually on my side and to not have to listen to another sales pitch when I need guidance.”

As your trusted energy advisor, YEC is your source for power and information to help you make the right decisions for you and your family.

The power of human connections

Building connections and enriching the lives in our communities are values shared by York Electric and local gourmet popcorn business Poppin’ Sweets. Owner Melanie Powell and Store Operator Kevin Wilkerson (pictured) have been on YEC’s lines since 2020 and have been forming relationships through their delicious treats ever since. Powell shares, “Many of the families and customers that visit our store often have existing connections with our Treat Team staff, and we enjoy being able to spread those connections and family culture to everyone around us.”

York Electric is proud to offer local businesses like Poppin’ Sweets the safe, reliable and affordable electricity they need to continue reaching others and running a successful operation.

A focus on education

As your Touchstone Energy Cooperative, York Electric firmly believes our educational efforts can have a far-reaching effect not only for the individuals we help but for the community at large. We first saw the potential in member Cate Tedford when she attended our Washington Youth Tour in 2018.

During her experience on our six-day trip to the nation’s capital, Tedford rose to lead her fellow co-op delegates and learn about the cooperative business model by participating in our Soda-Pop Co-op simulation. A year later, YEC recognized Tedford’s continued dedication and we awarded her a $1,000 Touchstone Energy Scholarship, representing Nation Ford High School. Using the scholarship funds from YEC and leadership experience gained on our Washington Youth Tour, Tedford went on to study Spanish and Philosophy with an emphasis in Law, Liberty, and Justice at Clemson University’s Honors College.

Tedford shares, “I am so grateful for YEC’s role in preparing me for my future and for supporting my goals of higher education.” Tedford is currently studying abroad at the University of Alicante on the Southeast coast of Spain and plans to attend law school after graduation.

YEC continues to assist students like Tedford in their higher education and personal development goals each year through our educational trips and scholarship opportunities.

Industry and economic development

Elkem Silicones is located in YEC’s East York Industrial Park and has been providing local jobs and helping hold down power costs for members for over a decade. As one of York Electric’s largest member accounts, Elkem Silicones plays a significant role in the rates we provide for all members. Industries like Elkem Silicones use power in consistent amounts and during off-peak times and serve as an example of why YEC invests in economic development in our area. These qualities enable us to purchase power at a lower cost, which in turn, allows us to pass on the savings to the rest of our membership and provide quality jobs for our local members.

After a 37-year career of serving as an operations director for Elkem Silicones and predecessor companies, Dave Beaty is entering retirement next month. As Beaty reflects on his time with Elkem Silicones and on his relationship with YEC, he shares, “York Electric has always been very informative and open for collaboration. We’ve benefitted greatly from YEC’s energy-saving efforts, such as changing our security lights to LEDs, as well as from incentives to assist in capacity expansion.”

Here at YEC, we ensure lines of communication are always open and assistance remains available for all our members, no matter their size.

YEC would like to congratulate Beaty on his successful career, wish him the best in retirement and thank him for his years of dedicated service.

Affordable, reliable service

Herb Smith has been a member of YEC for nearly 25 years. Since moving to Rock Hill in 1997, Smith has enjoyed being a co-op member for our affordable rates, reliable power and our community outreach. Smith explains, “When I lived in New England, my power cost more than double what it currently does, and power outages were frequent. Since becoming a member of YEC, I have thoroughly appreciated the affordability and consistency York Electric offers.”

Smith has also taken advantage of YEC’s community events, like our Annual Member Appreciation Shred Day. “I attend YEC’s Member Appreciation Shred Day event each year and have never missed one,” Smith says. “I look forward to mingling with other members as well as YEC employees at this event and appreciate the co-op offering an easy, secure solution for my personal document shredding needs.”

Concern for community is an important part of YEC, and we value the opportunity to provide members a co-op they can always rely on.

This is not your father’s factory

$1,000 scholarship encourages youth to look again at manufacturing jobs.

The roots of York Electric run back to an era, about 78 years ago, when YEC primarily was a rural electric power provider.

Today, YEC still proudly serves many rural homes and farms. We also serve plenty of suburban developments and industries that have put their own roots down here. All along, we’ve been about improving the lives of our members. Community commitment is one of YEC’s core values.

YEC serves several high-tech industries, including Silcotech Carolinas and Bluestar Silicones. We’re proud to call these industries members, too. Not only do these companies buy large amounts of power, which helps stabilize the rates that all member classes pay, they also provide livelihoods for many of our residential members and other local residents.

Paul Basha, YEC President and Chief Executive Officer

That’s why York Electric works hard to attract and retain these industries. YEC staff and board members serve on the board of York County Economic Development (YCED).

But if you’re remembering the textile plants of yesteryear, look again: Today’s manufacturing companies are, to paraphrase an old Oldsmobile commercial, “not your father’s factory.”

As YCED Director David Swenson notes, “Manufacturing employment in York County remains strong at 12 percent of our labor force and has grown by 1,900 jobs over the past few years. The manufacturing sector provides a good annual average wage at almost $60,000 and in 2016 this sector contributed the largest portion of our local economy with over $1.8 billion in goods and services produced in York County. The key factor to manufacturing employees getting a good job and achieving greater wealth is achieving a quality education.”

To help, YEC is upgrading our annual York Tech Scholarships. We’ll now offer one $1,000 scholarship to a student seeking a degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) field. See the ad on the next page for details.

Progress personified

YEC Member, Rhonda Belton

YEC member Rhonda Belton personifies the change in our service area. Raised on a farm in the Smith’s Turnout community on the York-Chester county line, she’s now a production scheduler at Bluestar Silicones, which her co-op serves. “Growing up, a lot of the manufacturing plants, they mostly offered production jobs,” Belton says. “There are a lot more jobs today as far as office personnel and other areas. We have positions in quality labs, R&D, plus technicians and scientists. It’s a mixture.” In her data-driven position, Belton’s finger rests right on the pulse of plant. “We stay pretty busy! I’m seeing a lot of growth. There have been a lot of new hires in the R&D department and production to help meet the customer demand for the new products.”

Local Workforce Wins Through Cooperation

Local workforce wins through cooperation

Bluestar Silicones began operations in 2012 in the East York Industrial Park, developed by YEC. An Elkem company, Bluestar Silicones is one of the world’s leading fully integrated silicone operators, with more than 60 years of experience and $575 million in sales globally. About 115 of its 160 employees work at the York site, with many from the local area. Operations Director David Beaty notes, “It took us a good three years to get the right workforce.”

To accomplish that goal, Bluestar Silicones takes advantage of two programs of the S.C. Technical College System, ReadySC and Apprenticeship Carolina, which prepare South Carolina workers to meet the needs of companies locating here. Another asset is the Manufacturing Excellence program at York Comprehensive High School’s Technology Center. Production Manager Al Chatham notes, “The professionalism of the program has improved by leaps and bounds. We’re optimistic that this is starting to take hold, and students are considering us as an employment option.”

Bluestar Silicones hired two local students as interns through the program, while MacLean Power Systems and Arvin-Meritor York got one each. If they work out, Bluestar’s hires will advance to the apprenticeship program, Chatham notes.

York County Economic Development Director David Swenson says many manufacturing companies in the area partner with York Technical College, Apprenticeship Carolina, ReadySC, and the local school system in order to train existing workers and secure new employees. “Working together, the workforce wins, the companies win and the community wins. This is what makes our area successful,” Swenson says.

Let’s talk about economic development

Paul Basha, YEC President and Chief Executive Officer
Paul Basha, President and Chief Executive Officer

During the election year, you hear a lot of talk about economic development. And for good reason, good-paying jobs are not as plentiful as we’d like them to be, so bringing in new industries to our communities is critical. It’s critical not only to our financial well-being, but also to local culture and our children’s future.

Here at York Electric, we talk about economic development a lot, too. Fortunately, that talk has revolved around success stories, such as the Lash Group, a healthcare consulting firm, and soon-to-open LPL Financial Carolinas to Fort Mill in the Kingsley Business Park. These two companies combined will bring more than 5,000 jobs to our area, and your cooperative is proud to serve them.

We are not too humble to claim that your cooperative played an important role in bringing these investments, worth nearly $240 million, to our area. We worked closely with the local development boards in providing the infrastructure to attract and assist these companies. We also partnered with the South Carolina Power Team, an economic development group focused on recruiting and retaining industries for the state’s electric cooperatives.

Our investments in these projects and others are guaranteed a return. Primarily, it fulfills the mission to improve your quality of life by providing economic opportunities. It also fulfills one of the Seven Cooperative Principles, Concern for Community. But more directly, it provides our system with a large base load, allowing us to spread out operating costs. The more industrial and large commercial loads we have, the less our residential members have to shoulder the burden of our power costs.

Of course, we don’t intend to stop at these successes. Right now, our area is a hotbed of industrial and commercial activity, and we intend to bring as much of it onto our lines as we can. Future successes throughout our service area will occur because of efforts we’re making toward improving our reliability and infrastructure. We’ll also be able to show the strong relationships we’ve built with our industrial and large commercial members.

And we’ll continue to make our territory attractive to potential industries. Because of our partnerships with the South Carolina Power Team and Santee Cooper, the state-owned generation utility, we’ve been able to help finance two speculative buildings. The 50,000-square-foot speculative building in Fort Mill near the intersection of Highway 160 and I-77 close to Shutterfly was recently leased to Catawba Enterprises, a freight-forwarding company. Also, construction is underway on a 40,000- square-foot speculative building located in our East York Industrial Park in York behind MacLean Power Systems. It is expected to entice more new industry and jobs our way in the near future.

Big investments in our communities, better-paying jobs for our citizens—that’s the kind of talk we like to hear.

Breaking ground for the future

Paul Basha, YEC President & CEO
Paul Basha, President & CEO

York Electric is committed to promoting an improved quality of life. One way we do that is by taking a leadership role in encouraging economic development. We work closely with economic development professionals as well as local and state government agencies to provide a conduit for business locations and expansions of businesses that support our community.

YEC assisted with the location of Shutterfly, Inc. to York County. Shutterfly, the on-line photo book company, moved into the former United American Video building in Fort Mill. The company began operating in the summer of 2013 and currently employs 300 in its 318,000-square-foot facility. It also expects to create between 350 to 500 new jobs in the next five years. Power reliability is crucial to the film-processing and printing industry, and YEC is proud to add this company to its growing list of large accounts.

East York Industrial Park

The East York Industrial Park (EYIP) is a shining example of YEC’s commitment to bringing quality jobs and industries to its service area. The EYIP, established by YEC in 1989, is a 465-acre tract of prime industrial real estate. It offers businesses a convenient location and affordable prices with a full range of support services. The EYIP has created more than 800 jobs and $85 million in capital investment.

Since 2012, Centrex Plastics and Bluestar Silicones moved into existing buildings in the EYIP, and on Jan. 8, Silcotech North America Inc., a manufacturer of silicone component, broke ground. The company will invest $3.5 million in an injection molding plant that will employ as many as 50 people in three to five years. The planned 18,000-square-foot facility is expected to be operating by July.

Where we’re heading now

Having assisted with the addition of one speculative building located in Rock Hill, we are now moving forward with plans to build a second one in Western York County. A speculative building, or “spec. building” as they are commonly referred, is a facility that is built in hopes that a tenant will soon locate.

Many companies would rather move into an existing building as opposed to building a new one. Coroplast, a German company that makes adhesives for the automobile industry, recently purchased the first spec. building. With their fast time frame for production and proximity to Charlotte, this available facility on I-77 fit perfectly with their needs.

Projects such as this are just another example of ways YEC works to improve the quality of life by providing jobs and increasing the tax bases for our school districts.

Save the date: May 20, 2014Save the Date: We’ll give you the credit–for participating in your Cooperative’s Annual Meeting–a $15 electric bill credit! The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 10th at York Electric’s main office in York. Each member who is present and registers will receive a $15 credit on their electric bill and have the opportunity to win valuable prizes. We look forward to seeing you there!

YEC will continue to focus on providing its members with reliable and affordable electric service. By maintaining a low-cost and abundant power supply backed by an active infrastructure and enhanced business recruitment plan, YEC plans to keep our service area a vital, powerful economic opportunity for business. Serving large commercial and industrial loads helps YEC hold down the cost of service for all members.

Leader in online photography comes to Fort Mill

Shutterfly Inc. LogoThe world leader in online photography is opening a 300,000-square-foot production and service center in Fort Mill. Shutterfly, Inc. will eventually employ more than 600 workers in the facility, scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2013. Capital investment at the facility is projected to be $60 million.

“Shutterfly saw an opportunity to lower their total costs of operation by expanding in York County,” said Mark Farris, director of the York County Economic Development Board.

“The combination of assistance from our county, the South Carolina Department of Commerce, skilled labor, and a well-positioned building made our area an attractive option. Thanks to direct assistance from York Electric Cooperative, including aggressive marketing and a quick response from staff, our job was much easier.” The photography giant will occupy the former UAV Building just off I-77 in Fort Mill and just 10 miles from a North Carolina-based Shutterfly operation. Most of those employees will transfer to South Carolina.

“I am extremely proud that we are able to retain the employees working in our Charlotte facility while adding new jobs and expanding our manufacturing footprint,” said Jeffrey Housenbold, president and CEO of Shutterfly, in a South Carolina Department of Commerce press release. “Fort Mill is an ideal location for its proximity to our employees and the new talented local labor pool.”

Shutterfly is now a member of York Electric Cooperative. “We are excited to welcome Shutterfly to our cooperative and to meet their power needs,” said Paul Basha, president and chief executive officer of York Electric Cooperative. “We are glad we could support our economic development officials in the recruitment process and congratulate them on this success.”
