Last May at our 2013 Annual Meeting, Wendy Catledge gave some of her neighbors from Derby Downs a hot tip.
A member services representative for York Electric Cooperative, Wendy told Lynette Bell and Jan Winkel about Power Saver Rewards, a load management program YEC introduced in 2011. Now, load management—no, it’s not about laundry loads—isn’t exactly a great conversation starter, we know. So Wendy added, “It’s a Cash Back Program.”
As she explained, co-op members who sign up and are approved for Power Saver Rewards first receive a $20 bill credit after a YEC technician installs a load-control device at their home. They will also get a $5 monthly incentive during June, July, August and September. Members can add additional (non-window) AC units at $3 per unit per month June-September.
The device switches off the AC briefly, at times of YEC’s peak power use, helping the co-op reduce its wholesale power costs, which all members share.
Making a difference
Jan and Lynette are glad they signed up. “The air conditioning is off for such a short time that we didn’t notice a difference,” Jan says. Her husband, Dennis, adds, “There’s only one difference we saw—a little lower bill.”
Lynette is also cool with how the program works. She adds, “I love to save money! When I see that credit on my bill, it always makes me smile!”
Power Saver Rewards participants like Jan, Dennis and Lynette have done their fellow YEC members a big favor. The program does make a difference.
With about 2,500 residential members participating last summer, YEC saved an estimated $175,000 on wholesale power costs during the 2013 cooling season.
As Jan told Wendy, “We did a good job didn’t we?!”
Lynette graciously thanked YEC “for offering this beneficial program.” We say thank you, Power Saver Rewards participants, for helping us to help all members save money.Save the Date: We’ll give you the credit–for participating in your Cooperative’s Annual Meeting–a $15 electric bill credit! The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 10th at York Electric’s main office in York. Each member who is present and registers will receive a $15 credit on their electric bill and have the opportunity to win valuable prizes. We look forward to seeing you there!
Expanding your savings
Now it’s your turn to help. We’ve expanded Power Saver Rewards as we’ve added necessary technology in YEC’s substations. By this spring, almost all substations will be ready. So we’re extending Power Saver Rewards to most residential members. Load control devices can be installed on HVAC systems and water heaters. Contact a YEC member services representative or see the Power Saver Rewards section for details.
