Operation Round Up

October 15, 2020

October is a big month!

October is earmarked to celebrate cooperatives. YEC feels the best way to do this is to show the impact of giving back as part of the cooperative principle, “concern for community.” With the help of our generous members, we have been able to help our community through three main channels this year:

  • Operation Round Up, funded by members—$200,000 in 2020 donations, with total giving equaling more than $3.1 million since 2000.
  • Give 5, funded by members and matched by YEC—$26,000.
  • The Burrell Foundation, funded by members, YEC employees and our community—$5,000.

Follow us on social media to learn more ways to be involved!

Do we owe you?

Operation Round UpYour membership with YEC carries value even after you move.

Check out our unclaimed capital credit listing to see if you or someone you know is on the list. The money is yours and we want to get it to you!

If you see your name, please contact our member services department at (803) 684-4248 so that we can process your account.

See where we are trimming

Maintaining rights of way around power lines is a year-round job. Keeping lines clear of vegetation helps prevent service interruptions. Then, when outages do occur, our crews have easier access to get your lights back on.

Right-of-way schedule for the remainder of 2020

We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work.

Doing well by doing good

Although our board of directors deemed it unsafe to host our annual meeting this month, I still have positive updates to share. As we continue monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic, we will communicate plans for our annual meeting to all of you, including voting on your trustees, bylaw amendments and single-member districts. For now, I bring you the good news in print until it is safe to be together in person.

Asplundh tree crews continue to maintain right of way across YEC’s territory. Keeping trees and brush clear from the line not only improves your reliability, but it also helps crews reach equipment during an outage for quick repairs. ERIN POWELL

Your co-op is in great shape

We were able to retire the largest amount of capital credits at one time in our history to you in April 2020. Members received refunds totaling $2 million and, hopefully, this money came at a time when extra cash was needed most. The co-ops of South Carolina are working together to make sure the Santee Cooper deal is the best it can be for our members. We will not have a rate increase in 2020, and we do not plan to see one within the next two years.

New services provide benefits

As promised, we have continued working to find a way to bring high-speed internet to the unserved and underserved areas of our territory. We know this is key to keeping everyone connected to the world, and we want to do our part to help. We’ve also rolled out new energy services programs, offering technology at a lower cost for you. Learn more about the benefits of our whole house generator program and ecobee smart thermostat programs. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we are always looking out for you and researching new ways to enrich our communities and improve the quality of life in our area. Because of you, we have been able to give $3 million back to help those in need through our Operation Round Up program. We have also continued to be a vital part of economic development efforts in our area so that our members have more job opportunities.

YEC's CEO, Paul Basha
Paul Basha

I say all of this with gratitude for our membership, our communities and our employees. Local men and women here at YEC care about you and your families. Their dedication and determination to serve you is why we were able to respond to 99.75% of outages in 2019 within an hour of the first report, no matter the weather conditions or time of day.

These are just a few ways YEC continues to prove that we have your back and will always set the bar high to deliver reliable, affordable electricity to you. Thank you for another great year!

Sincerely,

Paul Basha

Share the love with YEC

Cultivating success and a better quality of life reaches beyond YEC’s members to the communities in our area. That means York Electric is always looking out for you and your best interests and seeking opportunities to make your life better.

Improving life often means lending a helping hand. Since 2000, York Electric has returned $3 million to our communities through our Operation Round Up program. The credit goes to our dedicated membership: More than 70 percent of co-op members allow us to round their electric bill up to the next whole dollar, donating the spare change to our Operation Round Up Trust. This volunteer trust board helps local non-profit organizations that serve our membership. Its members review applications and, each quarter, award money to organizations that qualify and meet the mission of the trust.

Kim Trainer (left), and chief operating officer, Betsy Ruch
Fostering the Family’s chief executive officer, Kim Trainer (left), and chief operating officer, Betsy Ruch, use Operation Round Up funds to aid families wanting to foster children in the Carolinas. Trainer says, “Community programs like Operation Round Up enable us to strategically care for each family physically, emotionally and spiritually. Through supporting families in their call to foster, Fostering the Family helps ensure children are placed in loving, well-equipped homes.”

As Chairman Gary Farris says, “Serving the members of the cooperative has been an honor. I know we are making a difference to those who need it most.”

Operation Round Up is the epitome of what we can do if we work together. Who knew that a contribution of less than $7 a year could turn into such a blessing for so many members in need?

You probably know by now that complacency is not an option here at YEC. Your co-op always wants to improve and do more. That’s why we established a new 501(c)(3) organization in 2019, The Burrell Foundation. Named for the late Mr. Dick Burrell, a former York Electric board member who was known for his generosity and kindness, The Burrell Foundation can go beyond helping York Electric members. It will allow us to better serve our communities in unity.

Perhaps a child’s bike that was stolen needs to be replaced or a ramp needs to be built for an elderly member of the community. Maybe a single mom needs help to get back on her feet. The Burrell Foundation will be able to help. The foundation was designed to bring those who can help together with those who need help. If you are interested in participating in some of our initial fundraising activities, which will begin this year, please call our office.

Kathy Grier, executive director of the York County Free Clinic, with the clinic’s volunteer physician and medical director, Dr. Donald Shuler. Grier says, “Our community realizes that many of our neighbors cannot afford health insurance and need health care. Thanks to programs like Operation Round Up, we can provide our patients quality, compassionate health care at no charge.”

Thank you for helping us share the love with those who need it most. We locals here at YEC have a passion for serving and, just like you, want to make our area the best it can be.

A Heap of Heartfelt Gratitude

Operation Round UpAs a member of York Electric Cooperative, you are a part of a community service program that helps raise thousands of dollars each year for worthy community projects right here at home.

That’s right. By rounding up electric bills to the next highest dollar, York Electric contributes money to local charities, and the charities, in turn, provide assistance to individuals who are in need. The average member participating in Operation Round Up® contributes about 50 cents a month. Since the program began in 2000, more than $2.5 million has been donated.

Who distributes the funds?

news_2018_02_oru_valentine

The program is administered by the Operation Round Up Trust Board, an independent board of community leaders that assesses the needs for granting Operation Round Up funds. Local non-profit organizations are assisted so they are able to provide food, shelter, clothing, health care, etc. to individuals who are in need.

Contributions to Operation Round Up are tax deductible. In January and February, your utility bill will have a summary of the contributions you made to Operation Round Up during the previous year. York Electric will also use every available means, including South Carolina Living magazine, to keep you informed about how and when funds are distributed. Learn more about Operation Round Up

Pennies from heaven

Operation Round UpHave you ever heard the expression “pennies from heaven”? When we hear it at York Electric, we think of Operation Round Up, the community service program in which you round up your monthly bill to the nearest dollar. The extra change goes into a trust fund that is distributed to nonprofit charities throughout our service territory.

It’s a good deed that 58 percent of our membership does, and that level of generosity inspires us at York Electric. On average, your donation is only $6 per year—less than two pennies a month, and the money raised stays right here at home and it helps your friends and neighbors with needs, such as utilities, food and shelter.

When your cooperative decided to begin Operation Round Up, back in 2000, we knew that it would have an impact on our community. We had seen it happen at other cooperatives and the communities they serve. We took a trip to Palmetto Electric Cooperative to learn from the co-op that started it 27 years ago. It was obvious, from speaking with them, all the good that could come from Operation Round Up.

Once the York Electric Trust, the subsidiary of the cooperative that distributes the Operation Round Up program’s funds, began distributing the money you so generously donated, it immediately began to positively impact the lives of those who are less fortunate throughout our service area. Sixteen years later, we have no doubt that small change changes lives! To date, more than $2.2 million has been given back to our community for those in need.

With that being said, we’d like to invite all those members who are not yet participating to re-evaluate the program at the beginning of this New Year. It’s a small investment with a big return, and your contribution is tax deductible. In January and February, your utility bill will have a summary of the contributions you made to Operation Round Up during the previous year.

    People you know serve

The trust board has nine members; each chosen by a member of the cooperative’s elected board of trustees to represent their district. They serve on a voluntary basis, and they have big hearts and work diligently to make sure your contributions are distributed to worthy charities. The trust board keeps members informed through your cooperative’s website, yorkelectric.net, where the quarterly disposition statement is posted and updated directly after each meeting.

Exactly what is this Operation Round Up and more importantly will I recoup the amount that was rounded up?

Operation Round Up is a voluntary contribution on your electric bill which adds a few pennies each month. The most you could ever donate in a year would be $12, but most members’ donations are around $6 per year. These pennies are added together from all our participating members, and York Electric’s Trust Board makes grants to non-profit agencies who are serving needs in our community. Since 2000, York Electric’s members have raised approximately $2.3 million, and we now have 62% member participation.

    Disposition Statement

    Member donations reach $2-million milestone

Operation Round Up by the NumbersSince York Electric introduced Operation Round Up in 2000, participating members have contributed $2 million for local charities in York, Chester, Lancaster and Cherokee counties.

By allowing YEC to round up their bills to the next dollar, their average monthly contribution is only about 50 cents. But, multiplied by the power of cooperation, their small change makes a big difference for organizations like the York County Cancer Association, the Clover Area Assistance Center and the Fort Mill Care Center.

    A crucial difference

Created in 1959 by the late Judy Bledsoe, the York County Cancer Association currently serves 19 uninsured and underinsured clients—all county residents—with 156 client services. Those include cancer medications, supplies such as ostomy and mastectomy products, nutrition, and transportation costs for doctor and treatment appointments.

    Bob and Betty Loftin

The Operation Round Up Trust Board, which administers member donations, granted the association $8,500 for this fiscal year, says Betty Loftin, association president. It came at a crucial time, says her husband, Bob, the non-profit’s treasurer. The association received no United Way support this year due to a fund-raising shortfall.

The Operation Round Up grant will allow the association to serve clients through next June. “We were ecstatic,” Betty says. “When [the co-op] called that morning to tell me, I couldn’t help it, I cried.”

No wonder. Without the association’s help, some cancer-stricken clients often face tough choices, Bob notes: “It can be between paying for food or paying for medications.”

    Crisis prevention

Karen van Vierssen and David Hill
Executive Director Karen van Vierssen at the Clover Area Assistance Center, where clients “shop” for food, accompanied by food bank volunteers. Stocking the shelves is part-time employee David Hill.

Executive Director Karen van Vierssen says the Clover Area Assistance Center often helps people who have never had to ask for aid. “It’s usually a crisis prevention situation,” she says. “If you are living from paycheck to paycheck, all it takes is one incident—a car breaks down and that’s how you get to work. They have to decide between the repair or a utility bill or food. We are able to reduce the worry and prevent a worse issue.”

Relying mostly on local support such as Operation Round Up’s, the center carefully screens applicants. “We have a real obligation as stewards of the money to make sure it goes where it’s needed,” she says. Proving their situation empowers clients to move toward self-sufficiency, van Vierssen says, “That’s what we’re about: Empowering people to become more self-sufficient and less dependent.”

    ‘The perks’ of helping

    Ft. Mill Volunteers
Just a few of Fort Mill Care Center’s volunteers, including (from left) President Eileen Misek, Jan Habermeyer, Kathy Hess, Glenda Mize and Peggy Hall.

For years, Operation Round Up aid has helped the Fort Mill Care Center provide emergency food, utility assistance, emergency dental care and other services. In 2013, for instance, the center gave $246,452.70 worth of food to 2,831 families.

President Eileen Misek shares thank-you’s from grateful clients who just needed a hand up, not a handout. One wrote, “Success is the fruit of personal effort plus support and encouragement from someone like you.” Said another: “A super hug for all you do all the time to take care of ‘the least of these,’ those who need it most in our community.

The center’s volunteers, who contribute more than 3,000 hours a year, are inspired by messages like these, Misek says: “That’s what you call the perks!”

To enjoy the perks of knowing your small change will make a big difference locally, call (803) 684-4248 to sign up for Operation Round Up.
