May is Electrical Safety Month, so it is timely that your co-op just celebrated winning the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina (ECSC) 2024 President’s Safety Award. We are proud to be recognized for our culture of safety here at YEC, but more than anything else, we see winning this annual contest as a testament to our continued prioritization of sending each employee home the same way they came in to work each day.
It comes as no surprise that we have many hazards in our day-to-day job. Approaching each task with a clear understanding of what challenges may occur and what dangers to watch out for, and reminding ourselves that we are our brothers’ keepers, helps us reach our goal of staying safe.
Clear communication, follow-ups, training and thoughtful processes are just some of the ways we put safety and each other first. Each job, whether we are driving across our territory, climbing a pole, unloading a truck or working from a bucket, comes with the responsibility of assessing and avoiding dangerous situations. If we see something, we say something. This positive support not only helps prevent accidents, but it also helps pass savings on to members by avoiding the costs associated with incidents.
Your co-op is always looking out for you, and we encourage you to think about safety in your own life. Ask yourself how you can learn more, what conversations you can have to encourage safety in your family and where your priorities are each day. It isn’t just important that we go home safe every day, but that our members do as well.
