Simple ways to lower your power bill this winter
As temperatures start to drop in our area, we know your home’s energy use can rise. At YEC, we care about helping you stay warm and keeping your electric bill as low as possible. Because we’re a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, our goal is to look out for you, not to make money.
Here are a few easy ways to save energy and money during the colder months:
1. Set your thermostat wisely.
Try keeping your thermostat at 68°F when you’re home and a bit lower when you’re away or asleep. Each degree you lower can save you money over time.
2. Seal up drafts.
Check around doors, windows and outlets for air leaks. A little weatherstripping or caulk can go a long way in keeping warm air inside where it belongs.
3. Layer up and get cozy.
Wearing warmer clothes indoors and using blankets or throws can help you feel comfortable at a lower thermostat setting. Small changes such as wearing warm socks and sweaters or a cozy blanket can make a big difference in comfort and energy savings without raising your electric bill.
4. Let the sun help.
Open blinds and curtains on sunny days to let natural warmth in. Be sure to close them at night to keep the chill out.
5. Change your air filters regularly.
A clean filter helps your heating system run more efficiently and saves energy.
6. Take advantage of our energy-saving programs.
