An update for your co-op’s 82nd year

Employees at the annual meeting in 2023
YEC President and CEO Paul Basha recently conducted one-on-one interviews with all employees. He learned the thing employees like most about working at YEC is our family environment. Our team not only treats each other as family, but we are proud to extend the same level of service and care to our members. Employees Larry Self, LaToya Ellis, Monica Hambright and Shane Baker (from left), worked together to greet, register and present this year’s ballot to members in Fort Mill.

May marked another year of serving you and a successful annual meeting for your cooperative. We had many exciting moments, including the highest record of members who registered and voted in our history, our first Fort Mill annual meeting location and free hot dogs served by the York Rotary Club.

Annual meeting season is a time I use to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, where we are and how we plan to continue serving you with excellence. I’m grateful our Lord blessed us with another year without a major injury or large-scale outage, employees who live and breathe service, a dedicated board of trustees and the privilege we have to serve you and the communities we share.

Last month, capital credits were returned to members, breaking our record yet again by giving back $2.6 million. Continuing to return more money to members each year not only shows the financial health of your cooperative, but it also exemplifies the cooperative difference, our unique business model and the value of your membership.

Looking ahead, we are excited to be in the final stretches of our Rural Internet Project. Now, more than 4,500 members have access to high-speed internet that didn’t before. We’ve also kept your rates stable for the past 12 years and plan to continue that trend through this year. We continue implementing new technologies to mitigate outages, making your service more reliable than it has ever been before. This includes upgrades to several substations, researching, developing and implementing programs to support and educate our members who choose to own electric vehicles and planning for growth to ensure a robust infrastructure for the communities, businesses and members we serve.

Additionally, we are focused on the research and development of smart devices that can help our members monitor their energy use and save money. Your co-op is proud to be your trusted energy advisor, supporting you with the facts and educational materials so that you can make the best choices on implementing the new tools and technologies available in the market.

This wouldn’t be possible without the ability to focus solely on our members by way of the cooperative business model. We exist for you, our business is democratically controlled by you and, at your co-op, you have a voice. Your support of the cooperative business model keeps your cooperative’s business in your hands, run by a locally elected board of trustees. The alternative, which includes multiple layers of regulation, wouldn’t allow us to do the right things for the right reasons, for the best interest of our members. Thank you for allowing us to continue to look out for you as your neighbor, as your friend, as your family—as your co-op.

Paul Basha

Sincerely,

Players named for the 2022 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl

The state’s top high school football players will face off one last time this season in the 2022 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 10. The annual north-south game, organized by the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association, takes place at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach with a noon kickoff.

Get There

WHEN: Dec. 10, 2022. Kickoff at noon.

WHERE: Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, 705 33rd Avenue North, Myrtle Beach.

TICKETS: Online tickets $25 at TouchstoneEnergyBowl.com/tickets. At the stadium, tickets will cost $30 each.

DON’T MISS: The 2022 Mr. Football award—the state’s highest honor for prep athletes—will be presented during halftime.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: From 5:30 to 9 p.m. on the Friday before the game, 88 top players from the Class of 2024 will show their athletic talents in the Joanne Langfitt Junior Showcase. Players will be organized into teams and compete based on position and skill set. Events include 7-on-7s, a truck pull and bench press competition. The showcase is free and open to the public.

Get tickets now!

The game recognizes 88 student-athletes from across the state, not just for their athletic ability but for their character on and off the field. These young men develop a true spirit of camaraderie throughout the week leading up to the big game—honing their skills and developing friendships that last a lifetime.

Led by North head coach Robin Bacon of Spring Valley and South head coach Justin Gentry of Chapin, the coaching staff selected the top 88 available seniors for this year’s game.

“This whole process has been awesome,” Gentry said. “As coaches, we began evaluating film last spring and I can honestly say that the talent in South Carolina is as good as there is in the country. I am really looking forward to meeting all the players and getting to work.”

“My coaches’ tireless work of getting film and nominations has been a big plus. I feel excellent about the team we put together because of all the hard work and meetings over the last six months,” said Bacon. “We spent hundreds of hours looking at film and researching players.”

This year’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl is filled with players who have garnered college offers from around the country, including several from Power 5 programs. The coaching staff assigned to each squad will arrive in Myrtle Beach on Monday, Dec. 5, with players checking in the next day. Teams will then have four days of on-field preparation and film work prior to Saturday’s game.

Mark your calendars to shred!

Shred day photo

York Electric Cooperative hosts annual Member Appreciation Shred Day

Once again this year, York Electric will host its Annual Member Appreciation Shred Event in October. We are partnering with locally owned, veteran-operated Carolina Shred to shred your sensitive documents safely and securely.

Who is invited? All York Electric Cooperative members

When? Saturday, Oct. 8, 9 a.m. until noon

Where? YEC’s main office at 1385 E. Alexander Love Highway in York; Carolina Shred’s Office at 1682 Katy Lane in Fort Mill

What should you do? Gather any documents you need to safely dispose of and bring them to one of our two locations. Documents will be securely shredded on-site. Please remove any trash and debris, especially batteries and electronics, from your shredding material.

Do:

  • Bring your sensitive documents for safe disposal
  • Bring your documents in a box and be prepared to take the box back with you
  • Limit the amount of documents you bring – we want to have enough room for everyone’s documents

Don’t:

  • Add anything other than paper to your stack – trash, especially batteries, could start a fire
  • Bring your documents in plastic bags – they will clog up the machine
  • Forget to visit us on Saturday, October 8 from 9 am to 12 pm!

What is the annual meeting and why should I attend?

The Annual Meeting is a meeting of YEC’s members and a special occasion for members to participate in cooperative business and meet their cooperative leaders and employees. As a democratically controlled, not-for-profit business, our bylaws indicate we host a meeting for members to gather and vote on important matters each year. We’ve adapted the meeting to be safe for all and convenient for you by hosting registration and voting as a drive-thru experience and virtual business meeting. Electric Cooperatives Host “Ride Across South Carolina” to Raise Awareness for Heart Disease

The Electric Cooperative Ride Across South Carolina is a seven-day, 648-mile ride with stops at 18 cooperatives. Starting on October 25th, 2021, in the Upstate and ending in the Low Country on November 2nd, 20 cyclists will make their way through the state building awareness for heart disease and offering heart screenings to more than 2,000 electric cooperative employees.

Ride Across South CarolinaThe ride was established in memory of Brian Kelley, former President of Pee Dee Electric Cooperative, after his untimely death from undetected heart disease. A CrossFit athlete and avid golfer, Kelley died from a heart attack in 2017. The ride, also dedicated to all cooperative employees who have been impacted by heart disease or stroke, aims to build awareness for heart disease and provide preventative education for cooperative employees.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. with more than 800,000 people dying annually. According to the American Heart Association, S.C. has the 14th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. Many of those deaths could have been prevented through early detection and education. For more information on heart disease and prevention, visit www.heart.org.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Clemson University’s Rural Health Initiative will bring the statewide program, Healthy Me – Healthy SC, to each cooperative along the cycle route. The Healthy Me – Healthy SC initiative will provide heart screenings and education for all electric cooperative employees. Employees will also receive access to a blood pressure screening, and Body Composition Screening with an individualized nutrition plan.

The American Heart Association, also a statewide partner, will also be onsite providing heart and stroke education.

Jeff Lewis, CEO of Little River Electric Cooperative, stated, “We are proud to support and participate in the Ride Across South Carolina. Our employees are front-line workers critical to keep our system up and running, it is important that they are heart healthy. It is also an opportunity to set an example for the members we serve.”

The Electric Cooperative Ride Across South Carolina’s major sponsors are AFL, First Advantage Bank and CBRE, and a large number of other corporate partners are providing financial support for the event. All remaining funds will be donated to the American Heart Association and Clemson’s Rural Health Initiative.
