Members to decide on single member district voting

The South Carolina General Assembly has passed a new law requiring cooperative members to consider single-member voting districts. Members will decide in a referendum at York Electric’s Annual Meeting.

Important Update:
The York Electric Cooperative Board of Directors voted to suspend the 79th Annual Meeting because of the coronavirus pandemic. Voting on the proposed bylaw changes and single-member district voting will take place at a later date.

YEC Members to decide on single member district voting

Explanation

York Electric Cooperative is divided into nine (9) districts, and each district is represented by one Trustee on the board. This structure ensures that our entire service territory is represented. Currently, you can vote in every district election, regardless of where you live. However, if the Cooperative adopts single-member voting districts, you would only be allowed to vote for a board candidate who lives in the district where you live. That election would occur every third year.

Question

Would you like to continue to be able to vote every year for every seat on the Board up for election?

____ YES: “I want the opportunity to keep voting for every seat on the Board every year.”

____ NO: “I only want the authority to vote for candidates in my own district every third year.”

Proposed bylaw changes for York Electric

York Electric Cooperative encourages members to review the proposed bylaw changes that will be voted on at the Annual Meeting of Members. The full document showing these material changes, along with some additional typographical corrections, is available for download here.

Teddy Bear Trot 2020: Cancelled

Due to concerns related to the spread of COVID-19 Teddy Bear Trot 2020 has been cancelled. York Electric’s priority is looking out for you, which means keeping you and others safe in our community. YEC has been monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) threats closely and we have decided, in accordance with the recommendations from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention and our local and state health departments, to cancel the 2020 Teddy Bear Trot 5k and Fun Run, previously scheduled for March 28th. All persons who registered online through our RunSignUp page will receive a refund for their registration fees. We appreciate your patience as we work to do our part in protecting the health of our community members.

While we unfortunately must cancel our event, you can still support this worthy cause from the safety of your home! Join the fight against child abuse by supporting the Children’s Attention Home, a local shelter for abused and neglected children and teens. Read on to find out how you can help!

We appreciate your patience as we continue to serve our local communities and look out for your best interest with the ongoing concerns of Coronavirus (COVID-19). For any questions or concerns regarding this cancellation, please email Erin Powell at Erin.Powell@YorkElectric.net.

For more information on the efforts we are making to increase awareness and safety measures during this time, visit us online at www.yorkelectric.net or speak to one of our Member Services Representatives by calling 803-684-4248.

To still support the Children’s Attention Home, you can:

  • Give financially. Ensuring they have the financial means to respond to the needs of their children during this time is paramount.
  • Check their needs list for any supplies you may be able to help with during this time.
  • Stay connected through Facebook, Instagram, and www.attentionhome.org/give!

YEC partners with York County DSS and the Children’s Attention Home of York County to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect. Proceeds aid foster children at the Children’s Attention Home, which provides a safe, nurturing environment for children removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect.

Shred it!

YEC’s 7th annual Member Appreciation Shred Day set Saturday, October 5, 2019

To kick off our Member Appreciation Month in October, your cooperative is hosting its seventh annual Shred Day from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, October 5. We’ll shred at our main office, 1385 East Alexander Love Hwy., York, and at the Carolina Shred office, 1682 Katy Lane, Fort Mill. YEC members can use this safe, secure way to dispose of confidential or sensitive documents. Plus, all shredded material is recycled, making Shred Day both safe and environmentally sustainable. Remember, we’re locals looking out for you and your safety!

Member Service Representative DeDe McDaniel helps a member dispose of important documents. All members are invited to take advantage of this free service as a token of our appreciation. Photo: Erin Powell

Do:

  • Bring your sensitive documents for safe disposal
  • Bring your documents in a box and be prepared to take the box back with you
  • Limit the amount of documents you bring – we want to have enough room for everyone’s documents

Don’t:

  • Add anything other than paper to your stack – trash, especially batteries, could start a fire
  • Bring your documents in plastic bags – they will clog up the machine
  • Forget to visit us on Saturday, October 5 from 9 am to 12 pm!

A scoop of hometown news

Just like a nice scoop of ice cream brings you a cool, sweet flavor of backyard summertime fun, our Annual Meeting brings the same feeling of togetherness each year. Thank you all for a wonderful 78th Annual Meeting where we celebrated the value of your membership and communities. Looking back on the festivities of May 11, one thing stood out above the rest. The most valuable asset is YOU. The tightknit relationships among our members show we are more than a group. We are one. We work together to make a difference as a big co-op family. It is powerful to see our diverse membership and their families come together to enjoy fellowship and fun while learning about the impact they have had over 78 years.

These highlights capture the smiles of our members, making your co-op’s heart full. That’s what we are here to do— look out for you and make a difference in your lives. Speaking of a difference, let’s discuss more about the values you bring to our community. Not only have you banded together to give back, you’ve put a hefty price tag on your generosity through Operation Round Up, contributing nearly $2.8 million dollars since 2000. You also worked together to collect 1,200 pounds of food in the short span of four hours at our Annual Meeting. Together, you helped provide food for the hungry in our community.

Honoring the cooperative advantage of your membership is something we do every day, but actions speak louder than words. That’s why we are proud to say we have not increased rates in nine years and have planned to continue this for at least another two years. We also gave back the largest Capital Credit amount in our history—a whopping $1.5 million dollars.

Know that you are valued and that we will keep striving to increase the value of your membership for years to come. Thank you for attending our Annual Meeting and for helping us make a difference in our communities.
